Week 15 (May 8-12) Post # 3
We continue to work with the students in the tennis unit. Some of the kids are getting better. Some kids still struggle. It seems to be different everyday and not a dull moment. Working with kids I definitely need to stay on top of things and keep things moving. Kids at this young age seem to struggle more with staying focused. Mr. Downey has a great way in managing his classroom. He is consistent. I am enjoying my internship with him but still feel I want to go into geriatrics nursing. It is nice though to be able to compare the two generations.

Week 15 (May 8-12) Post # 2
I am continuing to learn this week how to break things down so that the kids will understand. I can't just assume that they know what I mean when I say hit the ball. If I were to do that balls would be flying everywhere. I have to model and walk the students through step by step. This makes me think back to when I was in Centra Care and how some participants had to start over while they went through Physical training to get stronger. It was a step process. Week 15 (May 8-12) Post # 1
This week it looks like more tennis. Some of the students do a pretty good job. They seem to have some natural athletic ability. This makes coordinating their movements for tennis easier. Other students struggle and I try and help them so they do not get frustrated. I encourage them to keep trying. I know from experience when things are not easy I want to give up. It is easy to take personal experience and connect to what I am learning through this internship with Mr. Downey. Week 14 (May 1-5) Post # 2
Today Mr. Downey and I are working with the kids on learning how to play tennis. Before this can start though he first runs through "I Do, You Do, We Do" Mr. Downey explained to me that this is teaching kids responsibility and showing them what to expect in class that day. He refers back to this when a student is not doing their job. Sometimes he just uses a look and that seems to get his student back on track. In observing this and seeing how goofy some of these kids can be it is hard to hold back a smile...definitely interesting. Week 14 (May 1-5) Post #1
Today Mrs. Evans and I are meeting with Mr. Downey to go on a tour of Post-Franklyn. Part of the school is a new addition and this is where their gymnasium is. The school was clean and Mr. Downey has a nice set-up. I was able after the tour to start my official internship. I will be working with kids grades K-2nd. I am looking forward to tomorrow doing a full afternoon with his students. Week 13 (April 24-28) Post # 3
In my conversations with Mr. Downey this week I am learning a lot about what he does. I know I do not want to be a classroom teacher like my mom and dad. I do though think working with kids and sports will be fun. I will learn a lot being in a classroom setting like Mr. Downey's.. Working with kids is different then working with our senior citizens. I think I will find that I will still need patience and a sense of humor. I am positive that the energy levels will be different. It will be interesting to see how the health field plays a part in Mr. Downey's job. Exercise is important in order to live a healthy and long life. Week 13 (April 24 - 28) Post # 2
I am now getting things in place to start with Mr. Downey. I am looking forward to the change. I know even though this is not my initial plan for internship I will still find it rewarding and in the field of health. Mr. Downey and I have talked about how important it is for kids to be healthy. His job as a physical education teacher promotes healthy kids. I think working with Mr. Downey will be interesting. Week 13 (April 24-28) Post # 1
This week I finished up my custodial position. I ended up mopping the art room. It was not very exciting but needed to be done. I definitely know through the short time I did this it is not what I want to do long term. I have a different appreciation for our custodians. They work hard at keeping our school clean. My Aunt Ginny shared with me that my Grandpa used to moonlight as a custodian at STP. This was how he helped pay their tuition. She said he could tell some stories about this job. I bet he could! Week 12 (April 17-21) Post # 3
I am now cleaning the chapel. It is nice to have something different today. I am dusting and sweeping it. Our chapel is actually pretty nice. Apparently it used to be an office. Fr. John had this area changed into a chapel so that students at STP would have a place to go in our school to pray. I find the history of our school interesting. Changes that have been made seem to be about the students here at STP...to make things better. |
